On October 13-15, 2009, according to the initiative of the Government of Azerbaijan Sixth Conference of Ministers of Culture of Islamic countries held in Baku. A Ministerial Roundtable on “Fostering Dialogue and Cultural Diversity – Baku Process: New Challenge for Dialogue between Civilizations was organized among the member states of ISESCO and invited states from Europe in the first day of this conference, 13 October, 2009. The roundtable was moderated by H.E Mr Abulfas Garayev, Minister of Culture and Tourism in the Republic of Azerbaijan, and H.E. Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, Director General of ISESCO. In this roundtable, the representative of the Council of Europe expressed the European Community desire to enhance North-South cooperation through concrete initiatives, and invited ISESCO and its Member States to further their cooperation relations with the Council, to attend the meetings and conferences it organizes and to contribute to the cultural projects favouring the materialization of the objectives specified in the Working Document of the ministerial roundtable and relevant documents. At the VI conference of culture ministers of member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation adopted the resolution to declare the city of Nakhchivan as the capital of Islamic culture in 2018. This resolution is the reflection of high value to the rich cultural-spiritual heritage of Nakhchivan, the ancient land of Azerbaijan, which has made valuable contributions to the dialogue among civilizations. Historically, Nakhchivan, as one of the great cities of the Near and Middle East, during his great history has played an important role to keep alive centuries-old achievements of Islamic culture. On 23-27 November, 2015 Azerbaijan hosted the 36th session of Executive Council and the 12th session of General Conference of ISESCO in Baku, under the patronage of H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. At 12th session of General Conference of ISESCO Azerbaijan hold the presidency of ISESCO General Conference and now Azerbaijan has the three year presidency of ISESCO General Conference On January 14, 2016 President Ilham Aliyev signed an Order establishing the National Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan for Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO). Set up with the aim of coordinating fruitful cooperation with ISESCO, the National Commission includes 10 people, chaired by Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfas Garayev. Considering the above-mentioned facts, it should be noted that Republic of Azerbaijan has conducted highly productive relations with the Islamic World, and organized many international events in global context. As a result, in early January, President Ilham Aliyev signed an order on declaration of year of 2017 a Year of Islamic Solidarity. The aim of the order is to provide the strengthening of Azerbaijan`s unique position in re-establishment of the Islamic solidarity. The Order says Azerbaijan was one of the main centers of Islamic Civilization for many centuries. The country played an important role in spreading out religion of Islam and re-establishing the Islamic Renaissance. All of these created conditions for formalizing the material and non-material heritage of religion of Islam. By being elected as the member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, ISESCO, as well as other prestigious organizations Azerbaijan established mutually fruitful relations with the Muslim world.
